Northwell improves patient experience by expanding bedside digital engagement

North Shore University Hospital is one of the best hospitals in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report. During the height of the pandemic, hospital leaders sought ways to overcome barriers posed by infection control demands without sacrificing their commitment to patient- and family-centered care. 

The hospital used tablets powered by Equiva software to  enable patients to make video calls without requiring downloads or passwords.  Some clinicians used the tablet as a comfort tool, playing soothing music, for example.

Subsequently, North Shore team members identified additional opportunities to use tablets to enhance patient experience. This includes making department-specific education materials available digitally to patients via Equiva bedside tablets. LanguageLine interpretation services are readily available at staff member’s fingertips via these bedside devices, as are hearing and communication assistance tools. Tablets also provide a wide range of entertainment options.
